Program Conducted by Rotary Club of Virudhunagar & Rotary Club of Thiruvananthapuram That Sunday during the South west monsoon this year has turned an unforgettable day in the life of every Sudharsanite (Sudharsan Engineering college family/faculty member), a day which made them to get their true wisdom through the success key "Love your Job". Our former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Says,"Those who cannot work with their hearts achieve but a hollow, half-hearted success that breeds bitterness all around". He reveals the success mantra that "Love your work whole heartedly, to enjoy the true essence of success". To experience this quote, a staff team of 65, of Sudharsan Engineering college, Guided by the Principal, Dr. M. Radhakrishnan under the magnanimity of Chairman V. K. Sundaram, Vice Chairmen, Ajay K.Sundaram and Vijay K.Sundaram, participated in the Staff Training and Empowerment Program (STEP-4) at Uday Samudra (UDS) Leisure Beach Hotel, Kovalam. To describe the beauty of the program venue, the UDS, located at the famed beaches of Kovalam, just 15 meters from the sea, is an exquisite 4 Star leisure beach hotel, nestled within a charming coconut grove, with pool and beachside dining facilities, etc. It was a wonderful time, being there in such a finest place along with the nourishing thoughts, through the STEP 4 programme.
Before dwelling in to STEP 4, it would be a happy journey to look back the previous STEP events, namely, STEP 1, 2 and 3. If you ask the walls and floors of Sudharsan Engineering college, 'What is STEP?' It will reply joyfully that, "STEP stands for Staff Training and Empowerment Programme". It is an unique training programme conducted by Sudharsan Engineering College, by taking them to different outdoor places, providing finest accommodation, food, etc along with excellent training session. This event is a brain child of the Principal Dr. M. Radhakrishnan, and has become an annual event since 2008. The first step (STEP1) was taken as a one day programme at Madurai, the famous seat of learning and scholarship where the Thirukkural was tested. The second step (STEP 2) was at Kodaikanal and it was a three-day programme. It was a sort of "Thank you" to the faculty members for getting the NBA accreditation. And of course it was a platform for encouraging faculties to set higher goals. The third step (STEP 3) was taken at Yercaud (a hill station in Salem), yet another 3-day programme conducted with the theme, "You are the Key".
The fourth step (STEP 4) was at the famous beach resort, Kovalam. The programme started with inaugural function around 6 PM on 19th June 2011 with lighting the traditional lamp (Kuthuvilakku) by the Chairman, Principal, Dean and their respective family members. Followed by this, Rotarian PDG V. Ganapathy Iyer, gave the inaugural address. His speech was a real motivating pill for the members. Dr. Gopinath, Former General Manager, Gulf Airways, delivered the felicitation address and he added a most valuable thought: "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow." Jc. P. N. Prem Kumar, the event manager welcomed the gathering and gave insight on the forthcoming programmes. He was also instrumental in helping the SEC team get their plans pulled down into the fields of reality.
The next day, 20th June 2011 got off with a good start by the Principal Dr. M. Radhakrishnan and Jc. P. N Prem kumar, who took everyone to the beach for trekking and seashore walking. The staff members had a thrilling experience by enjoying the dawn at the seashore of Arabian Sea. The next programme was by Lion PDG R. Ravi Kumar, who gave a lecture on "Creativity". The way he delivered the lecture and the questionnaire he prepared made everyone to think creatively. Receptive participants cleared their doubts with the speaker. "Management Games" was the next session by Mr. Chandru, and his faculty friends of MBA department. The games were awesome, filled with various exercises along with a lesson on the management skills like decision making, time management etc. After a delicious lunch in the hotel, the faculty members were taken to visit Thiruvananthapuram city. It was a very good opportunity for the members to know the culture, tradition, food habits, etc., of the Kerala people. The remarkable and memorable event of the STEP - Camp fire- started in the night around 9 PM, near the swimming pool, where the teachers showed their skills in singing, dancing, skits, tales, etc. Through all these sessions, the faculties chanted the mantra, "Love your job". The Rotary club of Nagercoil South lent their active support to this unique programme.
Day 3 also began with trekking and seashore walking, but this time in the other direction, with more sceneries and fun. Later the teachers showed their swimming skills in the pool located at the hotel. On the third day, the first session titled 'Motivation - Within and Without"was handled by Prof. Mahadevan, who made everyone to sit at the edge of the chair, through his real life experiences and in many other noble celebrities of 1950s. Throughout his session he threw a simple yet powerful quote that, "Win yourself to win others". The day was delighted by, Prof. James R. Daniel, through his valediction address. He emphasized the need for enhancing communication skills and enriching knowledge. Before calling it a day, there was a thanks giving and opinion session, in which every teacher rushed to the stage to convey their heartfelt thanks to the Chairman and his family, the Principal, Jc.P.N.Prem kumar, the flamboyant Task Master, Mr. Ramesh, Assistant Professor, SEC, and also to the organizing committee members. The management also gave mementoes for all the faculties as a token of thanks for their active participation.
